Certified sustainability in action
Økern Portal is an innovative office development in Oslo, featuring WICONA façades made using Hydro CIRCAL 75R end-of-life recycled aluminium - one of the most sustainable aluminium alloys currently available on the market. With a certified content of more than 75% recycled post-consumer scrap, Hydro CIRCAL 75R is a prime quality aluminium.
The project, designed by DARK Arkitekter, has an area of 80,000 sqm. Accommodating office space, a Radisson RED hotel, common areas and a food court, the building has been developed to meet the highest energy efficiency standards.
“On this project, fenestration plays an important role as the façade covers a large area. From the outset, there was a lot of discussion about how it should be designed in order to meet the requirements of BREEAM certification. And we were very excited to learn that we could have a façade made of recycled material by using Hydro CIRCAL 75R. This meant we were even able to take a sustainable approach with the façade," explains Arne Reisegg-Myklestad of DARK Architect.
BREEAM is the world’s leading science-based suite of validation and certification systems for sustainable built environment. Millions of buildings across the world are registered to work towards its holistic approach to achieve ESG, health, and net zero goals.
Energy consumption, pollution and the supply of materials have been carefully audited to ensure sustainable construction and an extended life cycle, while complying with the standards for obtaining the BREEAM Excellent classification.
We want to repay nature for what we take, this is what Økern Portal is about.

When it comes to comparing the environmental sustainability of a product, it’s important to compare like for like. Dynamic Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) act as an important validation tool. Assisting specifiers and contractors to make informed choices when considering their project’s BREEAM rating.
Whilst certified building products, like our aluminium façade systems, don’t directly score BREEAM points they will help to achieve points in selected categories at a ‘building’ level. Also providing architects and developers with transparency and traceability, and the opportunity to look beyond immediate use, as a potential urban mine for future construction.
